Public Sector Pension and Benefit Plans
Koskie Minsky’s Public Sector Pension and Benefits Group is recognised as a leader in regard to public and broader public sector pension and benefits plans.
Our Group practitioners are experienced in all aspects of public sector plans, from their establishment to ongoing administration and investment. Public sector plans often arise in a statutory context, and have lengthy histories that effect their design, funding and governance. Our Group understands the unique features of such plans and the challenges and opportunities they confront.
Our specialization in the joint governance of plans has built our reputation as advisors and legal counsel for clients in this sector. We have advised jointly governed plans in other sectors for many decades, and have brought our experience into the public sector as these plans have adopted different joint sponsorship and governance mechanisms over the last 25 years. We have worked on public plan issues across the country, in Ontario, in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia. We have also assisted in the creation and governance of non-pension benefit plans across Canada.
Our practitioners have applied a number of joint governance models in Canada and written about them extensively. Once such plans are established, we provide clients with a full range of legal and advisory services.
We are also apprised of ongoing public sector restructuring and its impact on public and broader public service plans. We are familiar with reciprocity issues in the public sector using different mechanisms that tend to be quite distinct from restructuring mechanisms in other sectors.
