2009 Koskie Minsky University Lecture in Labour Law
November 10, 2009
On October 30, 2009, Koskie Minsky once again sponsored the 2009 University Lecture in Labour Law at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario.
The Honourable Madam Justice Rosalie Abella of the Supreme Court of Canada spoke to an audience of 140 people which included lawyers, judges, professors and students, in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Federal Royal Commission on Equality in Employment.
In her lecture, Justice Abella spoke candidly and personally about how the Commission and the Report affected equality, employment law, her family and her career. She gave insight into the challenges of chairing the Commission and the thoughts, processes and obstacles that eventually gave rise to both the Final Report and the emergence of employment equity as a uniquely Canadian approach to equality in the workplace .
Koskie Minsky’s Bernie Fishbein introduced Madam Justice Abella, highlighting both her remarkable professional achievements and her well-known personal charm and wit.
Following the Lecture, Koskie Minsky hosted a cocktail reception and dinner where attendees had the opportunity to speak personally with Justice Abella. At the dinner, a number of speakers, including Susan Philpott of Koskie Minsky, provided comments on the lasting legal and social impact of the Abella Report.
The Koskie Minsky University Lecture in Labour Law is part of a special weekend of labour law scholarship and discussion, presented in partnership with both the Faculty of Law at the University of Western Ontario and Heenan Blaikie LLP.
